Bathing a Duck

These are my lovely pet ducks, I have two wood ducks and two Peking ducks. They are my babies, and as seen here they love their picture taken. They are still babies in ageing so therefore they are not yet named. The gender is still unknown until they get older.

Today was the first time that I bathed my babies. That was a new venture for me to say the least.

As far most ducks go, they love water. Mine are like most of their kind but with finances being the way that they are I have not been able to get a small kiddie pool for them. With as dirty as they were before the bath, I figured that it would be nice to clean them. Their natural oils was something that was interesting to deal with.

First in giving them a bath I had to catch them one at a time, then bring them inside the house. That was not as fun as it sounds with four dogs jumping all over the place thinking that the duck was in to play with. I am glad that the dogs love my outside pets like they do or that could have been bad all the way around for both the duck and me.

Second thing was to get the water to were is was warm enough to remove the dirt but not burn the duck. I had to be extra careful with what I used to shampoo them for I did not want any of the natural oils to be removed. The oils are there for keeping them warm when they are in water as well as keep many bugs like fleas, ticks and others off them.

This is also where the trouble with the natural oils became a slight problem. I ended up having to use our dish liquid. The oils made it hard to get the dish liquid on to remove the dirt.

After trail and error I figured it out with the aid of my husband.

But the fun came when they wanted to moth my hand, it was much different than that of a chicken. I let my chickens peck at my fingers all the time, for one they do not hurt and second it is something that they have enjoyed since they were buddies ( or chicks depending on where you live.) as they are mostly widely known here in the great state of Georgia.

Finally, after shampoo and and rinsing, there was the drying off. The ducks were not liking that part as well. This is something that they decided that it was time to try and attack the towel.

However, after all this, it goes without saying that I needed a nice hot shower myself afterward. I do not think that I will EVER bath my ducks again. Buying a kiddie pool seems far better than the trouble of bathing them.

Well, this ends today's blog. Until the next fun venture with my animals that I decide to try and do.

Happy pet owning, please be kind to your pets no matter what they may be. Animals do not need us humans as we would like to think, we need them far more. Make sure that they have what they need, as I am going to go get a pool for my babies.

Enjoy this blog and others, also follow me on Facebook to see more recent pictures of all my animals.
